Introduction
Biomass energy is the most abundant form of renewable energy worldwide. According to the IEA statistics, energy production from biomass and wastes is nearly four times that of hydro. It is also not dependent upon climate as it is for solar and wind. However, biomass potential is largely underutilized for several reasons and challenges: there are many different types of biomass products, i.e. woody biomass, agricultural wastes, manure, sewage sludge, food wastes etc., and there are as many different technologies for their conversion into intermediate solid, liquid and/or gaseous fuels. These fuels may then be used in more conventional processes through various routes for heat and power production. All of this makes it quite complex and difficult to select the most appropriate energy system in each situation and it requires specific skills and experience.

Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the various technologies available for the conversion of specific types of biomass into heat and/or power, together with their advantages and drawbacks;
  • Analyse a situation of energy production from biomass;
  • Chose and recommend the technology options for energy conversion based on given criteria (availability, price, performance, profitability, environmental impact etc.);
  • Evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of the project with the help of Retscreen Expert software.
